Why get an Utah CCW?
be able to carry a firearm on ANY public or private school premises, including charter schools and religious schools AND public or private institutions
To have loaded pistol, rifle, shotgun, and/or muzzle-loading rifle in a vehicle. Not just a handgun.
To be able to carry a firearm in ALL of the 38 states that recognizes the Utah concealed firearm permit.
To be exempt from the $7.50 background check fee when purchasing a firearm from a License dealer in Utah.
What is a Concealed carry mission statement?
Jeff Gonzales with Shootingillustrated.com states this on adoption of EDC values.
“Getting started in the concealed-carry world is fun. There is so much to learn, so much responsibility and so many new toys. It is easy to get swept up into the frenzy and find yourself losing sight of your true mission. If you haven’t come up with your mission statement for carrying concealed, I encourage you to make that a priority. Everyone will have their own based on their needs, capabilities and resources. The problem I see is that when you don’t have a well-defined mission statement, it makes it hard to make good choices that support your mission.”
It is important to understand the “Why” one exercises their right to carry a firearm everyday. The “Right to Bear Arms”, it’s an interesting choice of words for something associated with being a gift or privilege. Undeniably the average citizen being able to own and freely utilize firearms in everyday safe practices (i.e. Hunting, Recreation, and Personal Protection) is not a common worldwide government practice. Only three countries currently have a constitutional right to bear arms, all three in North America.
Let’s think a little more about this phrase’s roots. First off “Right” /noun/ entitlement, privilege, power, birthright. Next is the word “BEAR” /verb/ to carry the weight of, support or endure (an Ordeal or Difficulty). We end with “Arms” /noun/ in this case, meaning is Weapons to Strengthen and Protect ourselves against tyranny (specified but not limited to). We have as it states the Authority (Right) to Brave the weight or burden (Bear) any number of unregulated weapon platforms (Arms). The Gift of a burden? It’s something to ponder.
Take the time to get to know your firearm, safe storage practices, correct ammunition for training and self defense (stored properly), dry-fire training tools and practices, live-fire training and drills. The list goes on.
Have an expectation of outcome. What are your firearm freedom goals? From there gather information for the best tool for the task you set out to accomplish, get to know the tool, become proficient, then simply hone to reduce diminished skills from lack of use.
Trust the process. Start with fundamentals of position or stance, grip or hold, and most important trigger control. Fine tune those basics with routine practice. Beginning with the use of a training pistol or dry-fire practices. Take gradual steps with increased calibers starting with .22, ending with the highest strength caliber you can shoot comfortably and accurately. Accuracy with a 9mm will provide better protection than a .45 ACP fly by. Only hits count. Train for accuracy and start short. Ten feet is more than enough distance to start practicing, then fifteen, twenty etc. Eighty percent average proficiency from twenty feet is more than sufficient for most shooters self defense goals. You can move on to holster drawing and more evolved tactics from there.
Now that there is a little more clarification into the our privilege as Americans enduring the weight of carrying firearms all day everyday, to assist in strengthening and protecting each other/communities/country/world.
I know it sounds pretty serious, as it should. Firearms require understanding and respect, as with any powerful tool, in order to operate safe and effectively. Proper education and practical training is essential for any person who chooses to exercise their freedom of owning a weapon for Personal Protection. Whether it is just for at home or EDC. Be well versed with your firearms.
